11 11 11 2009

Today marks the 90th observance of Remembrance Day or Poppy Day or Armistice Day or, as it’s known here on our side of the Pond,  Veterans Day.  11 11 11 is a day to commemorate the sacrifices  members of the armed forces & of civilians in times of war, specifically the 1st World War, the War to End All Wars

Poppy Day is observed on 11 November to recall the end of World War I in 1918. Major hostilities of the 1st War, the Great War, the War to End All Wars, were formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918 with the German signing of the Armistice.  The day was specifically dedicated by King George V of England, on 7 November 1919, to the observance of members of the armed forces who were killed during war.  (Don’tcha just love Wikipedia?)

No matter what’cha callit, Remembrance Day is observed in countries formerly part of the Commonwealth, by France, Germany, Italy, Ireland & Canada.  It’s a tradition that’s observed in a lotta countries besides the US of A.

On this, the 90th observance of Veterans Day here in the US of A, Americans paws also to pay respects & to grieve 13 who died & many more wounded in an senseless act of violence, a terrible day.  Tradition calls for speeches & Taps & 21 Gun Salutes to honor fallen heroes.

Our President’s words @ this sad & grieveous ceremony remind us that we are the United States of America.  What happens to some happens to all.  We’re all in this together.  All for 1.  1 for all.

On this, the 90th observance of Veterans Day, Americans paws & reflect.  America is a nation of laws & due process, presumption of innocence & Constitutional guarantees, freedom to assemble & expression.  We might desire swift & immediate vengence, retribution.  But On-Demand Justice, Vigilante Justice will not bring back the dead or undo the deed.  Compromising values & core principles accomplishes nothing.  There is no such thing as something for nothing.  Our freedom is not for free.  OpalK9 OTJ
